I Wish I Was

A man steps out of his car
He stands in the quiet road
Looks up and down
Sees nothing
Sees me looking at him
I am nobody
He knows
He walks to the back door
Reaches into the car
Lifts out a small child
Perhaps three years old
The man is Chinese
The child, too,
Or maybe partly so
The man holds her strangely
She is face down
Arms and legs splayed out
She is so small and light
He holds her with one hand
Beneath her
And it is like she is flying
She is smiling
The smile is the cutest
Sweetest
Happiest
Child smile
I have ever seen
I wish I was
That child
